Since the museum was founded by JC Jacobsen in 1878, the museum has been a department of the Carlsberg Foundation and housed at Frederiksborg Castle – Christian IV's splendid castle from the early 1600s. The impressive grand rooms and richly decorated living rooms form a unique setting for more than 500 years of Danish history. The museum continuously explores portrait art as a genre as well as the history of Denmark and Frederiksborg Castle with changing special exhibitions.
Frederiksborg Castle is beautifully located on three small islets in Castle Lake in Hillerød. Cultural experiences for the whole family await within the castle's walls, while the scenic surroundings invite garden walks and sailing trips.
