Sønderborg Castle oozes former power and decisive events. Through both war and peace, the castle has had a central role as a power centre, and the massive Renaissance walls have housed both kings, princes, Danish and German soldiers.
This changeable story is told in a modern way through the many exhibitions of the castles, encompassing the captivity of King Christian II (1481-1559) in the castle and the Danish defeat in the Prussian War of 1864 through to the reunification of Southern Jutland with the northern parts of Slesvig after the First World War in 1920.
